Royal Navy, US Navy choppers fire strafing rounds to capture 13 pirates

Royal Marine commandoes captured 13 pirates and seized grenades, explosives and lifejackets taken from a recently hijacked cargo ship.

The civilian crewed Royal Navy supply ship, the RFA Fort Victoria, and the US destroyer USS Carney sent helicopters and a Royal Marine boarding party.

The capture was part of NATO's Operation Ocean Shield to prevent pirates operating in the Indian Ocean and will "send a clear message to other Somali pirates that we will not tolerate their attacks on international shipping," said the US naval Capt Gerry Northwood.

Days earlier, the Royal Navy vessel prevented the hijacked Greek-owned tanker Liquid Velvet from entering the Gulf of Aden to be used as a mother ship to launch attacks on passing vessels.
